BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Terrain and population make the fight against extremists in eastern Afghanistan different from the fights in other parts of the country, the commander of NATO’s Regional Command East said here today.

WASHINGTON – With Afghan forces leading operations in and around the spiritual home of the Taliban in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, a new Afghan-led model is emerging for the region, a senior U.S. officer said today.

KABUL – Noting that more progress than expected has taken place in Afghanistan over the past year, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates today expressed confidence that Afghan forces will be able to take the lead for security throughout the country by the end of 2014.
