October 20,  2009 €"  The Ohio Support Our Troops! Plate Hits the Road!

Bolt one on for the troops today!"¢

Yes, today! The new Ohio Support Our Troops! license plate is out and hot at all BMV offices statewide and online at the BMV website www.oplates.com Don't wait for your renewal month to get into this great plate!  You can swap out early!   The troops didn't wait. They went half way around for the world for us; let's all do this simple thing for them!  It's a perfect way to show them you care.

Said Martin Boire, Chairman of SupportOurTroops.Org, which created the plate, €œSo what the economy's tough. There's a war on and these men and women stepped up for all of us.  We owe it to them to do the same.€

The plates show support to the troops, provides encouragement to their kids here at home who see them on vehicles during the day, and raise money to assist the troops through the programs of SupportOurTroops.Org.

SupportOurTroops.Org annually ships about $6,000,000 worth of goods to the troops all over the world.

Why the Plates?

Said Kristen Brinkman, Ohio state coordinator for Support Our Troops® €œOur neighbors are deployed and stationed all over the world to protect our safety and interests here at home.  This license plate lets us show them and their kids here at home how much we care.€

"What a fun way to show them how much we think of them!  What a tremendous gesture of goodwill.   The Support Our Troops! license plates allow people to publicly show their support for their troops and families, will surround the troops' kids here at home with messages of encouragement, and raise patriotic private money®®"¢ to bolster the troops and their families who are both sacrificing so much to protect all of us."

Isn't it  time to show them how much we care?

The Support Our Troops! plate costs just $25.00 more a year, and the troops are more than worth it.   Those funds benefit the programs of SupportOurTroops.Org, working for the troops and their families.

Bruce Jonas, Vice President of Support Our Troops® said €œSupportOurTroops.Org shipped over $5,000,000 in goods to the troops worldwide during 2008 to Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Bosnia,  Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, Guam and so on.  These license plates help us do that.  We are on target to do about $7,000,000 in 2009.€

The Legislative history is remarkable.

Historic Moment in the Ohio Senate

Said Ms. Brinkman, this was the first time in Ohio history that the House Majority Leader and the House Minority Leader appeared together before the Senate and offered joint testimony in support of a bill to the Ohio Senate.€

Senate President Bill Harris declared €œThey give us the greatest worldly gift €" freedom.€  He continued,  €œthe men and women of our armed forces step up for all of us so often in so many ways,  and it's great be able to offer the opportunity to be there for members of the military with this new license plate.€

It was passed unanimously.

Historic Moments in the Ohio House

It is also the first time in known history of the State of Ohio that the House Majority Leader and House Minority Leader, have jointly sponsored legislation.

And it is the first time in known Ohio history that the Speaker of the House has himself introduced legislation.   HB 273 was sponsored by Speaker Jon Husted, joined  by Minority Leader Joyce Beatty.

The plate had 94 sponsors and passed the House unanimously.

Said Rep. Bubp, €œthis plate will make a statement to the Ohio service members serving around the world that we support them and their families here at home.   None of us can ever fully express our gratefulness for the freedoms we possess by the sacrifices of our military. But we can honor and bolster them through this license plate.€

House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty said  €œI am so pleased we could offer this small token of our appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our military members and their families. This gives Ohio residents the opportunity to show their support in a very meaningful, visible way.€

It is impossible to say enough of Danny Bubp's presence in the plate.  Elected to the House, he has since serviced three tours on active duty in Iraq with the U.S. Marines during the progression of this legislation.   Danny Bubp sponsored the bill which originally got started the process for the plate, and which was amended into the bill which the Speaker and Minority Leader introduced for passage in 2008.  Regardless of personal risk to himself while serving in Iraq to protect all of us, he continued to work to move this bill forward.
