Peaches at Walter Reed!

Written by SOT Staff
thumb_WalterReedPeaches1
April 8, 2010 -  Thanks to a caring patriot in Texas, soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center will be enjoying an assortment of amazing peach dishes for quite some time to come.   Starting next week, one to two pallets of very special peaches will be arriving at Walter Reed each month.   Enough for each bed in the hospital.  Darn hard to keep up with those Texans!

When the idea was first presented to Walter Reed a worker there told Martin Boire, CEO of SupportOurTroops.Org  “every room has a small refrigerator by the soldier’s bedside, and we’re going to put a jar in each one, and during the day while they’re laying there recuperating, they’ll be able to take a fork and feel that wonderful taste in their mouth.  It’s going to be a wonderful treat and spot of enjoyment for them.”

And now that the monthly deliveries are about to start, Walter Reed coordinator Linda Rasnake says “I am SO excited about the Peaches that are coming our way!  I have told so many of our Wounded Warriors and Family members about the shipments coming in and they are literally asking me daily when they will be here!  I am going to be starting a cooking class for our Wounded Warriors and the first thing on the dessert menu for me to teach is PEACH COBBLER!!!”

Anyone who has ever been in the hospital knows how simple things like comfort food can take on a very large meaning and a bright spot in a long, tedious day.   And it’s not just the peaches.  It’s the message being delivered that we all know the soldier is there, care about him or her, and care enough to send them something to better their stay and let them know we are thinking about them and hoping the best for them.  Is this a great country or what?

Did you know that the Walter Reed Army Medical Center is 101 years old?  And returning home through its beds you will find America’s best.  Unselfish.  Brave.  Willing to stand up for us, even when large blocks of “us” vacillate and prevaricate.  The men and the women with the moral fortitude to step out into the street and protect all of us and our spouses and our kids.   At Walter Reed you will meet absolutely amazing people.  Not pretenders.  The real deal.

Walter Reed is located in Washington, D.C. and serves more than 150,000 active and retired personnel from all branches of the military.  In 2011 Walter Reed will be combining with the Bethesda naval hospital by 2011 to form the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Support Our Troops® Pinellas Chapter
Coast Guard wife Ashley F.  has formed a Support Our Troops® Chapter in Pinellas County, Florida.

Ashley was thrilled to find an easy to access method to help the troops.

According to Ashley, " I was looking for a way that I could give back and let the soldiers know that I stand behind them. I still can't believe how easy it was so start a chapter in my community, I was actually all set up and ready to go in less than 48 hours. I also have nothing but good things so say about the people in the national office, anytime I have any questions or need any help, they never hesitate to get me the information I need. If I ever have to move I will surely start a chapter in that area if there isn't already one. This is truly a great organization and I am very excited to be apart of it.

They had their first meeting Friday the 12th and held a yard sale the next Sunday.

They are getting started on planning a softball tournament.  The men are also jumping in and all involved will be mutually exploring the organization of an annual motorcycle Heroes Ride in the area.

Another testament to what good Americans think of their troops!

February 9, 2010 –  $1,910, 844.64 of trail mix and microwave popcorn has just been delivered to Marine Corps bases all across America.   Yes, that’s one million nine hundred thousand dollars.
383 pallets!

9 tractor-trailer loads!

And all from individual American citizens to their troops.

It is a showing of the goodwill of the people for their troops.   It is especially amazing because it was done during a recession.   It just goes to show how real Americans step up for those who step up for them.   Is this a great country or what.

The tractor-trailers delivered the goods to the Marine Forces Reserve in Louisiana, Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany Georgia, Headquarters Battalion  Washington DC, Marine Barracks Washington DC,  Recruitment Depo San Diego, Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton,  Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms,  Air Station Yuma Arizona,  Air Station Cherry Point North Carolina, Quantico, Marines Corps Community Services Command,   Air Station Miramar California, Air Station New River North Carolina,  Logistics Base Barstow, and the Mountain Warfare Training Center California.

A fun and positive way to show support for the troops!

“Thanks Marines and  we hope it shows you how much we all appreciate you”, said Support Our Troops® Chairman Martin C. Boire.  “What a gesture of Americans’ trust in you, and our honest gratitude for everything you do for us.”

Each case is labeled with a thank-you sticker.   What a fun way to show them how much we think of them!  What a tremendous gesture of good will.

"Your [popcorn] service makes a world of difference and helps to boost the morale of the service men and women throughout the world."  ~~ an Admiral.

Where did all this popcorn come from?
From the American People!   The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts went door to door down street alls across America and asked people if they would like to donate $25 of popcorn treats to the troops.  And at $25 a pop this many people did.

Who did this?
SupportOurTroops.Org, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Trail’s- End Popcorn Company teamed up to pull this off.  Said Support Our Troops Chairman Martin C. Boire: “kids, you want to know how to pull off something this huge?  Get into Scouting, you’ll get to organize hundreds of things.”

Who manufactured it?
Nothing but the best for our troops!  Trail’s-End® popcorn is known as America’s Best Popcorn. It is produced by Weaver Popcorn Company, one of the largest producers and manufacturers of popcorn products in the world. An 80-year-old, family-owned company located in Indiana, Weaver Popcorn distributes its products in more than 90 countries.
