What happens to the car?
43 million used cars are sold each year, most of them in the very efficient wholesale auctions. Older, damaged and problem vehicles are often sold directly to dismantlers for parts and various metals. Our vehicle handler’s advantage is that we have a very large national network of auctions so that they can match it to the appropriate buyers to achieve the maximum sales price.
Quick Pick up
Our vehicle handlers are happy to arrange a “Quick Pick-up”. The normal pick up schedule is within a few days of receiving the paperwork you mail in. You will receive a call from our handler’s service to arrange a convenient time. You do not need to be there. It usually takes 45-60 days from the time the vehicle is picked-up until the entire process is complete and the net cash proceeds are delivered to your non-profit. The agents at our handler’s call center keep track of the timing and status of the vehicle in the sales process and are available to give status updates to SOT and you.

Tax Benefits for You.
You are entitled to receive a tax deduction equal to what the vehicle is sold for by the charity if you itemize your deductions. If the vehicle is sold for less than $500, you can deduct the fair market value up to $500. You will receive a tax receipt stating what your vehicle sold for within a few days of the sale of your vehicle. Call the toll free donation number if you need another copy of this receipt.
When to Donate
Most vehicles over five years old are sold at wholesale auctions by auto dealers that take trade-ins. Our program sells at the same auctions and without the dealership’s overhead.
Repair Costs or Smog Issues
Donate when mechanical problems mean that the cost of fixing the vehicle or smog problem exceed its retail value. An individual might not be able to sell a vehicle with mechanical problems, but these cars sell well to expert mechanics at wholesale auctions.
Our handler’s service center personnel are experts in solving title issues. They deal with the DMV every day.
